Opossum Facts

  • Activity: Nocturnal
  • Type: Mammals
  • Diet: Omnivores

Keep children and pets away from opossums! Opossums are willing to fight with dogs and cats — using sharp pointed teeth to cause serious injury. While opossums usually are not aggressive until cornered, they have lost much of their fear of people and will enter your homes if food is available. You may find opossums under porches and decks, in tool sheds, even in attics, garages and below buildings.

Opossums forage at night, damaging vegetable gardens, feasting in fruit trees, raiding garbage cans, and eating pet food left outside. An opossum will eat nearly anything, including fruits and nuts, snakes, mice, and even roadkill.

When an opossum chooses to avoid contact, it will climb a tree or hide in any convenient burrow. The opossum may also choose to discharge a smelly, greenish fluid from its anal glands in order to repel a threat.

Opossums do carry various diseases – including tuberculosis – and host fleas, ticks, mites and lice that will transfer to your pets. In Orange County and Los Angeles County, the opossums’ fleas have increased the spread of flea-borne typhus.
