Coyotes belong to the dog family — they are medium – sized: larger than foxes and smaller than wolves. Coyotes are highly adaptable animals. As a result, coyotes thrive throughout North America. Because cities provide an abundant supply of food and shelter, coyotes do inhabit suburban communities. Of course, they naturally inhabit forests and mountains. Coyotes give birth to a litter of 4 – 7 pups in March and April. Parent coyotes and their pups remain a family unit for six (6) months. Coyotes prefer to den in locations where human activity is minimal; therefore, city dwellers are likely to encounter coyotes in sheep hills and expansive parks near any suburban community. Coyotes are capable of jumping over fences, digging under fences and passing through gaps in barriers. Fences should be a minimum of 6 feet high. To prevent digging below fences, a wire – mesh apron may be attached to the bottom of the fence and buried one foot below the soil, extending outward. When using wire – mesh, stays should be no more than 6 inches apart. Bright lights and sound devices are not effective, long – term coyote deterrents. Studies have shown that – due to the highly adaptive nature of coyotes – coyotes will usually overcome fear of lights and sounds within a few months.
